Ideal Weight Calculator: What Should You Actually Weigh?

No single number defines a healthy weight for everyone. This tool uses three validated medical formulas and averages them to give you a realistic, personalised target β€” not a one-size-fits-all figure pulled from a generic chart.

What Is Ideal Weight?

Ideal weight is the body weight associated with the best health outcomes for a given height and sex. Originally developed for clinical drug dosing, it now also serves as a general health and fitness reference point.

The Three Formulas

Devine (1974): Male = 50 + 2.3 Γ— (inches over 5ft) | Female = 45.5 + 2.3 Γ— (inches over 5ft)

Robinson (1983): Male = 52 + 1.9 Γ— (inches over 5ft) | Female = 49 + 1.7 Γ— (inches over 5ft)

Miller (1983): Male = 56.2 + 1.41 Γ— (inches over 5ft) | Female = 53.1 + 1.36 Γ— (inches over 5ft)

Worked Example β€” Male, 175 cm

175 cm = 68.9 inches. Excess over 60 inches = 8.9 inches.

Devine: 50 + 2.3 Γ— 8.9 = 70.5 kg | Robinson: 68.9 kg | Miller: 68.7 kg
Average: 69.4 kg

Why These Formulas Matter

  • Clinical standard. Used in hospitals for drug dose calculations and weight status assessment.
  • More personalised than BMI alone. Height-adjusted and sex-specific.
  • Concrete goal. Gives an evidence-based weight target for fitness planning.
  • Multiple perspectives. Averaging three formulas reduces single-formula bias.

Limitations

  • Does not account for muscle mass β€” a bodybuilder may be above ideal weight yet be perfectly healthy.
  • Age and body frame size are not fully captured in the formulas.

Practical Tips

Use as a guide, not a rigid target. Being within 5 kg of the formula result is generally a healthy position.

Combine with body fat tracking. A person at ideal weight with 30% body fat is not necessarily healthier than someone 5 kg above it at 18% body fat.

Final Thoughts

Ideal weight provides a ballpark target backed by medical research. Use it as one of several tools β€” alongside BMI, body fat, and waist measurements β€” for a complete health picture.
