Steps to Distance Calculator: How Far Did You Actually Walk?
Fitness trackers do not always convert steps to distance accurately because stride length varies by height and pace. This calculator uses your actual height and walking pace for a personalised distance estimate โ more accurate than a generic fixed stride assumption.
The Formula
Walking Stride = Height (cm) ร 0.00415
Running Stride = Height (cm) ร 0.0055
Distance (km) = Steps ร Stride Length (m) รท 1000
Worked Example โ Walking
8,000 steps, height 172 cm, walking:
Stride = 172 ร 0.00415 = 0.714 m โ Distance = 8,000 ร 0.714 รท 1000 = 5.71 km
Worked Example โ Running
5,000 steps, height 180 cm, running:
Stride = 180 ร 0.0055 = 0.99 m โ Distance = 5,000 ร 0.99 รท 1000 = 4.95 km

Why Accurate Distance Matters
- Training planning. Knowing actual distance helps you set and track progressive weekly volume goals.
- Race preparation. Weekly distance targets are central to half-marathon and marathon training plans.
- Calorie accuracy. More accurate distance leads to more accurate calorie burn estimates.
Final Thoughts
Your step count is more useful when you know the distance it represents. Taller people cover significantly more ground per step โ accounting for that makes your data more meaningful.
