Ovulation Calculator: Find Your Most Fertile Days
If you are trying to conceive, timing matters. You are only fertile for a narrow window each cycle — and knowing exactly when that window opens is the single most effective thing you can do to improve your chances. This calculator identifies your ovulation date and your peak fertile days.
How Ovulation Works
Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary — typically once per cycle. The egg is only viable for 12–24 hours after release. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for 3–5 days. Together, this creates a fertile window of roughly 6 days per cycle — 5 days before ovulation and 1 day after.
The Formula
Ovulation Day = LMP + Cycle Length − 14
Fertile Window = Ovulation Day − 5 to Ovulation Day + 1
The "minus 14" accounts for the luteal phase — the time from ovulation to the next period, which is relatively fixed at 14 days regardless of cycle length.
Worked Example
LMP: January 1. Cycle length: 30 days.
Ovulation = January 1 + 30 − 14 = January 17
Fertile Window = January 12–18

Peak Fertility Window Summary
| Days Before Ovulation | Relative Fertility |
| 5 days before | Low |
| 3–4 days before | Moderate |
| 1–2 days before | Peak |
| Day of ovulation | Peak |
| 1 day after | Very Low |
How to Confirm Ovulation
- Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs). Detect the LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation. Most reliable over-the-counter method.
- Basal Body Temperature (BBT). Temperature rises 0.2–0.5°C after ovulation. Take temperature every morning before getting up to build a pattern over several cycles.
- Cervical Mucus Changes. Around ovulation, mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and egg-white-like — a sign of peak fertility.
- Ultrasound. Most accurate — can directly visualise follicle development and rupture.
What Affects Ovulation Timing
- Stress. Major physical or emotional stress can delay or suppress ovulation.
- Illness or fever. Can shift ovulation by several days in either direction.
- Travel and time zone changes. Can disrupt cycle timing temporarily.
- Thyroid conditions. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism both affect menstrual cycle regularity.
- Significant weight changes. Very low or high body fat can suppress ovulation.
Practical Tips for Trying to Conceive
Have regular intercourse every 2–3 days during the fertile window. This accounts for cycle variability without causing stress around timing.
Do not rely solely on calendar calculations. Cycle length varies, and ovulation does not always happen on schedule. Combine this calculator with OPKs for better accuracy.
Take folic acid now. Neural tube formation happens in the first 4–6 weeks of pregnancy — often before you know you are pregnant. Start folic acid 3 months before trying to conceive.
Reduce alcohol and smoking. Both significantly reduce fertility in both men and women.
When to Seek Help
If you have been trying for 12 months without success (6 months if over 35), consult a fertility specialist. Tests for both partners should be considered — male factor contributes to about 40% of infertility cases.
Final Thoughts
